The Sandy Castle...

It was a beautiful day when I went to visit the castle. The sky was a brilliant turquoise blue!! And who can resist building sandcastles on the beach on a such a wonderful sunny day?  For sculptor, Ed Jarrett, he has taken sandcastle building to a whole new level!

 The Sandy Castle was built by  Ed, in Point Pleasant Beach, at the Jersey Shore. He was hoping to break a Guinness World Record -- on the beach in the middle of a shoreline that just had been decimated by Superstorm Sandy.

 

The Guinness record, which Jarrett previously set  in 2011, was a sandcastle that stands

 at 37-foot, 10-inch high. Sadly, This Sandy Castle did not beat his old record....but there are plans to try again!!!

Close up of the Sandy Castle shows a laughing Gargoyle, and alligator,  and a prince trying to save Rapunzel.

One side of the castle depicts a Grimm fairy tale, complete with a two-headed dragon, one head fire-breathing, and  Rapunzel in a tower with her prince to the rescue! The other side of the sandcastle is an ode to the Jersey Shore, with the  tower becoming the Barnegat Lighthouse.

The Calm Before the Storm ...

Hurricane Sandy Delivered Extensive Damage Throughout New Jersey, Keansburg Amusement Park was Hit Hard 

The carousel house at Keansburg Amusement Park is almost empty now. The ride has been dismantled. The shiny jewel-laden horses and carriages, and other animals, are being stored at the water park across the street.

All of the pieces been recovered since they were swept into town by Hurricane Sandy’s tidal surge on the Raritan Bay. Even the lion that a local teen tried "to procure."

Collecting Shells

I've been collecting seashells for many years, and my collection keeps getting bigger and bigger. I found that a wonderful way to display them is through photographs. Here, you can see the different techniques I have applied to various shells. The possibilities are endless.

All the Colors of the Sea

I love all the colors and textures in  the image"All the Colors of the Sea." This collection of shells is from Sanibel Island. It features a wonderful starfish, bay scallop, rough pen shell, and small knobbed whelk. This piece was given a painterly quality to enhance nature's beauty!

Sand Dollar

The legend of the sand dollar is sometimes said to represent coins lost by mermaids or the people of Atlantis!  In subtle hues of blue and gray, my "Sand Dollar" is displayed on found driftwood with flecks of sand scattered about.

The Magic The Grand Carousel, P.T.C. #59

In January 1998, Earl Jamison, founder and creator of Peddler's Village, found an antique carousel in deplorable condition, stripped of its original figures, he made it his mission to save and return to its opulent glory.

Exploring Duke Farms

Hillsborough, New Jersey

Today, Duke Farms is a lush 2,740-acre nature preserve. Back in 1925 it was the home of the late heiress Doris Duke. Doris Duke was just 12-years old when she inherited the property after her father died. Eventually she gained control of the property after suing her mother. Doris restored the property and moved in at the age of fifteen. She loved her new home and made it her main residence. Doris incorporated innovative ecological farming methods and  in 1958 she created and designed, over a five-year period, a unique botanical display in the Horace Trumbauer conservatory and greenhouses known as Duke Gardens. Duke Gardens opened to the public in 1964. Doris Duke died in 1993. 

After almost seven years of preparation, the preserve opened 1,000 acres of forest, meadows and prized orchids to visitors. It is one of New Jersey's richest natural habitats.

Despair in Black and White - texture

Inside the old Hay Barn: At the time of its construction, the Hay Barn was near the center of farming activity, but as more land was purchased and the farming moved elsewhere, the structure was no longer needed as a hay press. Following a fire in January 1915, the building remained abandoned. Doris Duke used the ruins as an outdoor sculpture gallery, placing individual marble statues of human figures in linear arrangements along the walls, which can still be seen today.
